Discover Age is an online directory of services, activities and organisations for older people in Dundee which was developed as part of the Reshaping Care for Older People Agenda. The database contains everything from where to get information about benefits, to community exercise projects, to information about lunch clubs and befriending schemes. There are a number of ways to search the directory, including by area, keyword, postcode and category.
The directory goes hand-in-hand with DIAL-OP, a confidential information helpline, provided by local volunteers, through Volunteer Dundee. The Helpline – 01382 305757 – is open Monday to Friday during working hours. DIAL-OP works to ensure that people in Dundee have access to the information they need, providing them with the answers they are looking for, or offering guidance on where to go if they require more in-depth advice. The enquiries that come through the helpline relate to a broad variety of issues – callers may want to find out about social activities or lunch clubs in their area, share their concerns about feeling lonely, or ask about what help and support they are entitled to.
DIAL-OP also offers a Telephone Befriending service for those who have little family or social connections and are looking for some companionship on a weekly basis, alongside a Morning Call service, which aims to provide reassurance by giving isolated or vulnerable people a short welfare call in the morning.
DIAL-OP is always keen to take new volunteers on board, so if you have some time to spare and would like to get involved in any of the Dial-OP services, contact us on 01382 305757.
